Three-fifths of online SMEs plan to try out new sales channels

63% of small and medium-sized e-retailers in the UK intend to expand their trade into more channels this year, with a quarter saying that they will use online marketplaces.

According to a study by Royal Mail, 73% of businesses surveyed felt that competition is hotting up in their sector. Many are seeking new ways to sell in order to stay ahead of the competition.

Despite the increased competition, the future looks positive for independent e-retailers, with nearly six in 10 reporting sales increases in 2014.

Nick Landon, managing director of Royal Mail Parcels, said: “Royal Mail’s annual tracker study of UK SME online retailers shows that there is strong optimism for growth despite increasing competition.”

He added: “UK SME online retailers are thinking carefully about how they can develop their businesses during 2015, with one in four looking to expand to online marketplaces, such as eBay and Amazon Marketplace.”
