This Saturday marks Small Business Saturday, and the news that there are 114,445 more small businesses now than there were in 2015 gives a sense of the extraordinary health and vitality of the UK SME sector. Research suggests that shoppers spent around £623m with small businesses on the day last year, up from £504m in 2014. Almost half the people surveyed claimed they shopped small specifically because of Small Business Saturday, which is a testament to its growing reach and influence.

The Office for National Statistics recently found that there are 114,445 more small businesses operating now than there were in 2015. Britain’s small business ecosystem totals 5,545,885 companies, which are responsible for the livelihoods of about 8,730,000 people – up 108,000 on last year.  #SmallBizSatUK trended at number 1 all day on Small Business Saturday with over 100,000 tweets sent in support of the day, reaching more than 25 million people.

This year’s special day promises to build on the success of the previous years.
